Being a fan of the University of Michigan was impressed on me at an early age and something that I consider to be at the core of my identity. My father, an undergraduate alumnus, has always spoken about the University of Michigan with great admiration. My earliest memories are those of watching Michigan football games with him on television. Normally reserved, soft-spoken, and difficult to excite, my father would transform into a boisterous fan on game days. He would enthusiastically shout at the television, watch each play with focused intention and create a palpable dynamism that was transferred to me. When I was around 8, my father took me on a tour of the campus, which concluded at dusk in the Law Quad. With a picturesque glowing magenta sky as the backdrop, he spoke reverently about the law school, heralding it as the paragon of intellectual achievement which, unwittingly, generated in me an objective that I have ever since been pursuing. I have been fortunate enough to call Ann Arbor my home for the previous three and a half years as an undergraduate. Ann Arbor is also where my family lives. After my parent’s divorce and subsequent career changes, I found myself moving from a frim member of the middle class to being on Medicaid. Having to contact my doctor to switch to cheaper, covered medication, and calculate meticulously the cost of groceries and the exact amount of time that they would last me are experiences that I had not had previously nor even thought about. The financial anxieties and chagrin associated with having less than many of those around me has fundamentally altered my perceptions about wealth and status, perceptions that I believe could be of some benefit to a well-rounded academic
