Since a young age I have always enjoyed visits to the doctor's office but I specifically idolized trips to the hospital. The hospital is my church, my place of sanctuary, where I feel I belong. At age 14, my adoration for the world of science and medicine prompted me to spend a summer volunteering at my local hospital. Needless to say, I learned quite a bit while volunteering; I saw the good, the bad, and the really bad. I also learned of some unexpected realities- the shortage of mid-level doctors (physician assistants and nurse practitioners), the crisis of an ER my local hospital experiences due to the lack of low-income medical clinics in our area, as well as the unrelenting love I feel for the hospital environment. During this short summer before I began high school, I stumbled upon my calling. Upon graduating college I would be honored to work in a poverty ridden Spanish speaking country through World Vision. My planned area of study depends heavily on the university I choose to attend. I have been accepted into the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill however my top college choice is Wake Forest University. Wake Forest is a private liberal arts college with a tight knit community feel, this is one reason I am so drawn to this university. The first time I stepped onto campus I felt admittedly at home. Wake Forest also offers a competitive 3-2 accelerated physician assistant program. This advanced program allows select students to combine an undergraduate degree with a physician assistant degree in a combined five years. This program is one aspect that makes Wake Forest University so appealing to me, a program that gives me the power to jumpstart my career by shedding two years of school. I also plan to minor in Spanish culture and languages while at Wake Forest to equip me for my future
