As an International Relations and Economics major, I am primarily interested in pursuing a career in the public policy world in Washington, DC. Working in the realm of politics and economics would be the most fulfilling place for me in the professional world. Public policy is how change is enacted. It is what our societies revolve around. In my opinion, this gives it a greater sense of importance and relevance than other career areas. I desire meaning in my life, and I believe a career in the public policy world would certainly fulfill that wish. I have been accepted to the International Internships Program in Singapore. I am currently in talks with the program supervisor to facilitate an internship for public policy research or international trade. We have not decided on what my internship will be specifically, but it will hopefully draw on both of my majors and introduce me to the professional world. This is a significant moment in my college career. Prior to this summer, I have had a few internships, but not any rigorous ones that reflect a real job and improve my understanding of what I might do in my future career. I have never been to Asia. It seems like many Americans get so used to Western culture, that we forget that our lifestyle is not universal. Though Singapore has been called “Asia-lite”, or the most westernized country in Asia, I anticipate it will still be different enough to allow me to appreciate the diverse cultures that make up Singapore.
