Homosexuality is still being perceived as taboo and as a result, homosexuality bulling has become increasingly higher in communities and in schools with people refusing to accept homosexual people. The word gay is a word used to refer to a person who is attracted to a person of the same sex. It is mostly males that are called gays and women are called lesbians, however the word gay is commonly used to refer to any homosexual person.
For some people homosexuality is nasty, whereas for some it is seen a matter that must be spoken about and addressed to remove the stigma around it. The children in schools are diverse and come from different backgrounds and hence should be taught how to treat one another in acceptable ways. Just like In the article ‘’not in my school’’ John who is the primary school life skill teacher included the lesson of gays by reading ‘’ And Tango Makes Three’’ with the objective of explaining to the learners that there are different families, including gay parents, with the focus on what the word gay means and how gay parents love their children in the say way that parents who are in heterosexual relationships …show more content…

A fifth of learners who are seen to be homo or bisexual are also bullied, seven out of ten teachers in primary schools have heard homophobic remarks from learners. From the statistics above it can be deduced that homophobia is something that must be dealt with both in schools and at home to avoid such instances from increasing any further because the more this topic is seen as taboo and gays are mistreated it is the more that these learners see it as acceptable to make fun of other learners. if the children are deprived of knowledge on this matter it will only lead to future problems of bulling in schools.
The principal of the school was concerned saying that the children were too young to be taught about gays. However, beginning the talk of accepting others and respecting others is never too early as it sets a foundation for the learners that will later be built upon at a later stage. With careful attention be paid so not to confuse the learners since this could be new content to them so they should be given a chance to ask questions and that promotes further learning.
