According to The Innocence Project, 2 to 5 percent of people serving time in prisons are innocent. This means that of the United States’ 2.2 million prisoners, 44,000-110,00 of them are serving time for a crime they did not commit. Adnan Syed is one of those innocent people. His freedom was taken away from him as a highschooler at the age of 17. Blamed for the murder of ex-girlfriend Hae Min Lee, Adnan was found guilty in his second trial because of casual friend and witness Jay Wilds. Jay’s timeline, accepted mainly because of unreliable cell tower information, is not realistic or supported by any physical evidence against Adnan Syed which proves Adnan is innocent of Hae Min Lee’s murder. Jay’s timeline does not match up with the time it would take to get to places. It is far fetched that Adnan killed Hae in the time Jay said because there is no room for errors (Koenig, “Route Talk”). It took Koenig twenty-two minutes and two seconds to re-enact the route from the school to calling Jay. If Koenig would have got distracted anywhere between the school hallway and the payphone, Jay’s timeline would not fit the possible times. The State used inaccurate data and manipulated the story of the witness, Jay Wilds, to persuade the jury Adnan Syed was guilty. It is evident that police wanted Adnan Syed to be incarcerated from the start. Authorities went as far as influencing the witness to change his story to put Adnan Syed, a muslim teenager, behind bars for the rest of his life. Adnan is one of many innocent humans incarcerated across the United States because of his race. People were more concerned about finding closure for Hae Min Lee’s murder than finding the right killer, and because of this Adnan Syed will have to spend the rest of his life stripped of his rights and looked down upon for a crime he did not
