John Brown killed many innocent people who did not own slaves. According to document E, on November 20th, 1859, Mahala Doyle expressed her anger towards John Brown. John Brown deliberately shot two of her sons and her husband because they were pro-slavery, even though they did not own slaves and weren’t ever going to own them. This shows that John Brown is a villain because he killed almost a whole family that did not own slaves, all because they were pro-slavery.

John Brown Hero or Villain The story of John Brown happened many years ago, yet it still puzzles historians today. John Brown was an anti-slave abolitionist who was put to death after pleading guilty of murder, but is he considered a hero or a villain? John Brown is a villain for three simple reason, he murdered many different people, he attacked a federal arsenal, and he could be considered a terrorist. The first reason John Brown is a villain is because he murdered many different people.
(Document F) Since he lied about almost everything, that is another reason to believe he is a villain. Even though he was facing death, he could have told the truth and tried to tone it down, not lie about everything. He also ended up saying something that would be completely contradicted in a later letter to his friend. Finally, he tried to start a revolt/civil war. In document G and H, it proves that John Brown WAS trying to start a revolt, despite what he said in F. He said, in a letter to his friend, that he “wanted to put the slaves in a condition to defend liberties” (Document G), which translates to putting the slaves in a place where they can fight back, or in other words, he was supplying them with
John Brown should be considered a traitor for three reasons, he killed five people, he led a revolt, and he armed slaves. The first reason, John Brown killed five people. He, in cold blood killed 5 white men in a field for what? Owning slaves?
These men were not killed in a large fight- they were picked out and targeted for no reason. John Brown had no right to kill three innocent men. John Brown is a hero or a villain? No, he is neither, he is a domestic terrorist. John Brown was born on May 9, 1800. He grew up as a hater of slavery and as an adult decided he was going to do something about it. When he was 55, he moved to Kansas with a few of his kids to work on his mission.
Many people believed he was a hero, but many others believed he was a villain. John Brown murdered many innocent people, committed treason, and used violence. On May 24th, 1856, John Brown led an attack on a pro-slavery settlement at Pottawomie. He killed and tortured five
Later in a letter to prosecutor Andrew Hunter, he states that he gave the slaves a chance to fight back though he never intended to free the slaves. Usually, if someone says something very serious like that they would dedicate their life to free slaves, they would most likely stick to their word and not contradict everything they’ve ever done in their life. “ I intended to convey this idea, that it was my object to place the slaves in a condition to defend their liberties, if they would, without any bloodshed, but not that I intended to run them out of the slave States” (Brown Document G). John Brown says that he gave the slaves the chance to fight for their lives while he didn’t actually intend to free them, while in his speech, he tells everyone that he did not want people to die and that he only wanted to “free” the slaves. It is often thought that John Brown was a hero because he had many supporters who supported his doings.
Lastly, we acknowledge the fact that he died to end slavery. John Brown raided Harpers Ferry, the home of the U.S. arsenal. His goal was to steal weapons from the arsenal to give to many slaves in hopes that they would revolt against their masters and other pro-slavery supporters. However, he and his followers were caught and later hanged for treason. With one speech at his trial and one letter sent after he was sentenced, John Brown didn’t try to escape or plead; he accepted his execution and died as a fierce martyr for all of the slaves and abolitionists (Documents F and G).
They could not agree with his violent tactics, but “respect[ed] his character and actions” because “he did not recognize unjust human laws, but resisted them.” When he was alive many did not listen to Brown’s speeches because he was often seen as too violent, and even after death abolitionist did not condone his use of violence but was proud to live by his example to interfere to free slaves. Henry David Thoreau stated in “A Plea for Captain John Brown” that “the question is not about the weapon, but the spirit in which you use it.” Thoreau is arguing for Brown in that most cases most the violence we encounter is often for nothing, but Brown was using violence to support something he saw was unjust. Since Brown could kill for his views of slavery, why couldn’t those who matched his view find an alternative way to bring an end to slavery and an end to the violence.
John Brown, a hero in the eyes of Northern extremists, his actions supposedly justified by God and the lives of five people which he stole. When John Brown and group of supporters attacked Harpers Ferry that killed a total of five men, it caused a controversial conflict of impressions towards him to this today. Brown’s exact intentions for abolishing slavery is vaguely known, but being a white male with all his rights and privilege, why was John Brown was so passionate about ending slavery if it wasn’t affecting him? Regardless, John Brown ended up killing five different men, and caused terror amongst others, the amount of people killed does not differ the effects it has caused to others. Is John Brown an “American hero” or a “Cold terrorist?” John Brown isn’t crazy but may seem that way when you look at what he has sacrificed. John Brown Recently John Brown’s noble cause has been questioned and people have made accusations whether he should considered a patriot or a terrorist.
Each and everyday we see a new home being built, or a shopping mall opening, or even an apartment complex in the making, but we never think of at what expense all of this is happening. By building all of these new additions we are killing hundred of different species in the process. Humans are cutting down forests, and destroying animal’s habitats. Extinction is one of the most pressing problems we are currently facing today. Each day a new species shows up on the extinction list.
