The early years foundation stage is a framework to work from when working with in the early years setting. It sets out the standard for learning, development, safeguarding and welfare for the children in England from birth to five years. Working in the early years setting you must have an understanding of its: • Scope and legal status • Overall structure • Principals and themes. You also need to understand what happens when your setting has an inspection and how the development of the children will be assessed. Scope and legal status The EYFS was introduced in 2007 and became statutory in 2008 to improve children in the early years. It is mandatory and there are legal requirements to make sure the standards in the framework are met. Since 2012 it has been a legal requirement to implement the EYFS in all schools and also people on the ofsted register like child minders and other childcare providers. The settings within the EYFS framework include: - • Children’s centres • Day-care nurseries • Maintained nursery schools (maintained school-meaning a school that is maintained by the local authority or funded by public money) • Reception classes in school • Preschool groups • Home based care. Other settings providing care for children do not have to work alongside the EYFS requirements but are encouraged to think about learning opportunities while in their care. Overall Structure The overall structure of the EYFS is to help the practioner and should be used as a guide in the setting they are in for the under 5’s. Whichever curriculum is used the setting must meet the standards for the child’s development, learning and care. The EYFS is divided into 3 sections:
