Since the dawn of mankind, humans have evolved to where we are now throughout the means of reproduction. In order to populate the planet, both a man and a woman need to be present to engage in intercourse. As a result, the woman may find herself pregnant with their child – and thus the cycle of life begins. In fact, women are essentially the catalysts of life, for, unlike men, our bodies are used as incubators (up to nine months) to nurture and protect our potential offspring. In addition to the growth of humanity, sex has become more than just a method of procreation and has also developed into a form of communication. For this reason, contraceptives have been introduced to society to prevent the possibility of pregnancy. Thankfully, women have a last resort: abortion. Abortion is a procedure that terminates a pregnancy before a child is conceived. As individuals, we deserve to have a say as to what happens to our own bodies and our futures; therefore, I believe abortion should be legal. Those who are pro-life may disagree, stating that abortion is murder, but what if a woman is not ready to conceive? If a woman is financially uncapable, unprepared to start a family, does not wish to pass on genetic mutations, or, simply, does not want kids — she should have the right to opt for an abortion, for the act does not affect anybody else but herself. If abortion were to remain legal and more accessible, then not only would it continue to serve as emergency birth control when contraceptives fail, but it may also decrease the number of unwanted children who are already in-need of families.
