When I was only 15 years old, a close friend of mine whom I have known for years, got pregnant. She was a girl that had been on my cheer team for many years and exceeded academically. Not the typical girl to become pregnant at a young age. After spending just a few days talking it over with her parents and now ex-boyfriend, she elected to have an abortion. This action was difficult for me to comprehend at first and I was totally appalled that she had chosen to let go of her newborn child. “How is it that someone could find it so easy to take away another life?” I thought. Pro-life encompasses that a fetus has the right to life from the moment of conception. Previously in school I have studied the development of human life from womb to birth. In these classes I have learned that a fetus is considered alive nearly three weeks after fertilization due to the fetus beginning to develop a heartbeat, brain, and pain receptors at this time. This is where the ethical factor takes place: Is it ethical to have an abortion after the first three weeks of pregnancy? Typically, pro-life is against abortion for ethical or religious reasons. Not only is putting down a child unethical, but it also is a violation of the 14th amendment. Pro-life incorporates the rights of the mother and her choice of whether she wants to keep the child or not. Not every pregnant woman is able to provide for a child due to finances, relationship stability, age, living conditions or various other factors and so she may choose to have an abortion. This is the mother looking out for the wellbeing of the child and his/her future. Electing to have an abortion is not an easy decision for any expecting mother. There are also circumstances that having an abortion is not to be questioned at all such as, rape, incest, and when the mother is physically in danger due to her pregnancy.
