Have you ever heard of Abraham Lincoln? Although many Southerners didn’t like him at the time, Abraham Lincoln was one of the greatest presidents ever and he made a huge impact on the U.S. even before his presidency. He began the process to free slaves, reunited a war-torn country, and pointed the U.S. in the right direction with his many enactments. Abraham Lincoln was born on February 12,1809 in Hardin County, Kentucky (“Abraham Lincoln Biography”). Only 9 years after he was born his mother died to poisoned milk. This saddened him greatly, but in less than a year his dad, Thomas Lincoln, married again to a women named Sarah Johnston. Lincoln was a very tall person standing at 6 feet 4 inches and he was very strong for his thin body. From these attributes he made a living in physical work. He was known to be very good at splitting wood with an ax. Over time, Lincoln eventually saw himself living in New Salem, Illinois. There he worked with the citizens and took leaps and bounds in his speaking skills (“Abraham Lincoln Biography”). He also was a really good story teller. People loved to hear his fictional, but adventurous stories. Thanks to his popularity among the people, Lincoln was chosen to be their captain in the Black Hawk War which started in 1832 (“Abraham Lincoln Biography”). Even though he wasn’t put into battle Lincoln gained many major connections in politics. This was the start of his political career. After the war, Lincoln was voted into the Illinois State Legislature (“Abraham Lincoln Biography”). He choose the Whig Party to represent. Lincoln campaigned for months and on November 6,1860 the hard work payed off. He was elected the 16th president of the United States (“Abraham Lincoln Elected President”). He became the first Republican president and the first that was born outside of the original 13 colonies. (“Abraham Lincoln Elected President”). The election was a landslide. It wasn’t even close! He handedly beat his opponent, Stephen Douglas. Many people were surprised that Lincoln had won because he was not thought to be a frontrunner and he only won 40% of the popular
