Active Listening Effective Communication

A description of two different types of communication used in the chosen care setting and an explanation of the purpose of each.
Intro
The two specific types of communication that I have chosen to discuss are verbal communication and non-verbal communication.
Verbal Communication
The first kind of verbal communication I observed while on placement was active listening. I observed this when the teacher used a clapping rhythm to make sure all the kids were paying attention and listening to him. I observed this when the teacher asked me to take a reading group. The group had to discuss the book with each other and express how they felt about the book. For example, advantages and disadvantages. The purpose of Group discussions within teaching is that they are important as they promote interest, engage students, provide the teacher with feedback, provide the students with feedback, promote preparation, help to balance what happens in class, help to control what happens in class, encourage students to get involved, help to develop important speaking skills and they also give students an opportunity to reflect back on what they’ve been doing.
The third type of verbal communication I observed while on placement was staff meetings. I observed this as I was asked if I could stay behind after school to help with photocopying and while I was doing my photocopying a staff meeting was taking place. The purpose of Staff Meetings in teaching is that they allow information sharing, encourage teamwork, allow teachers to interchange, allow for better collaborative options, improve communication and introduce new perspectives.

I observed this because the teacher used a variety of different types of paralanguage such as Body Posture, Gestures, Facial Expressions, Tone of Voice, Pitch and Eye Contact.
