Did you know that 80% of people who commit mass shootings are using legally obtained guns? Gun control is a very controversial topic in America. The second amendment states that “A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.” Is this saying that each citizen has the right to own arms or that just the militia, or people in the army, have the right to bear arms? This highly debated topic goes two ways. Proponents believe that allowing citizens’ to own guns grants for a higher level of protection. For example, school shootings like Columbine and Virginia Tech were not committed by a killer. They were committed by angry, mentally disturbed kids who found a way to get a gun. If these kids had no access to guns, then some of these tragic events may have never happened. While some proponents may say that allowing citizens guns leads to a sense of safety for that citizens, opponents disagree, arguing that if there was no access to guns the playing field would be even between criminals and ordinary citizens, and there would be less violence and no need for a gun in the first place. According to one article, policemen admit having difficulty trying to distinguish law abiding gun carriers from criminals. Guns are a dangerous weapon and can easily fall into the wrong hands. Weather law abiding or not, citizens should not be allowed firearms. Allowing citizens firearms can increase the danger of suicide, crime, and higher rates of violence. Also if citizens have guns average person's life is in danger daily. Finally guns are liable to fall into the wrong hands if citizens are allowed to own them. Gun control has been debated long and hard going back and forth from proponent to opponent for many years. All in all I believe for the pursuit of happiness to take a step in the right direction guns should not be allowed to citizens law abiding or
