Marijuana Legalization “Twenty-seven states and the District of Columbia have either legalized medical marijuana or decriminalized marijuana possession -- or both” (Boyette and Wilson). Many states have already legalized the use of marijuana and many will continue to do so. Marijuana being legalized by the federal government would lead to many benefits if it is taxed and has an age restriction placed upon it because many people are using marijuana illegally and monitoring its use could have many benefits. It has both negative and positive health effects on the human body. Marijuana can be dangerous to children if it is used during pregnancies. Many children whose mother smoked marijuana while pregnant have been shown to have more difficulty with basic tasks than children who were not exposed to marijuana while in the womb. They often have trouble with concentration and memory that they struggle with for the rest of their lives. Marijuana use during pregnancies also often leads to growth stunt in children and weight issues. Using marijuana can also have an effect on the body of adults. One of the biggest effects is that marijuana has addictive qualities and if it is used often enough it can lead to addiction. “Nearly 10% of people who use it become dependent on it” (Ratini 2). Marijuana also specifically effects men in terms of their sperm. “Long-term marijuana use suppresses the production of hormones that help regulate the reproductive system. Currently many people are making a living by growing and then selling marijuana. If marijuana was legalized it would create many legal jobs for those who are currently unemployed. Another aspect of marijuana currently being illegal is that it has put a large amount of citizens in jail. Jails are funded mainly by the taxes of citizens. If there were fewer people in jail then there would be less funds needed to feed, clothe, guard, and house the inmates which would lead to less funds needed from the government for the jails which would then lead to less taxes. Having taxes lowered would lead to there being more money back in the pockets of citizens creating less poverty. Another important benefit of marijuana being legalized is that the sales of it could be taxed which would add to the taxes being used for government funding which would lead to better schools and roads. This would benefit the economy significantly. If marijuana was legalized it would need to be monitored. Currently marijuana is being used illegally daily by people of all ages. It being monitored would lead to less crime involving marijuana sales and use. Not only that but if marijuana was legalized the usage could be monitored. So that fewer people overuse marijuana.
