I interviewed owner/manager of Heirlooms Consignment from Basalt, Colorado. Brenda McCartney has been working in the consignment business for about 30 years and it is no surprise how successful she has become in the smallest town in the Roaring Fork Valley.
Question 1: What advice would you give to new business manager?
My advice to new business owners is about going for it and dream big. There are so many risks that business owners make in the beginning but it is important to give it a go and believe in your company fully. I have been successful because I was passionate about my work and I knew what I had to do. There is so much time, work, and energy that goes into being a small business manager but anything is possible. To new business managers my advice is to try hard, stay organized, see the visions of the future customers, and stay connected with others as well.

My biggest fear as a business owner is not making the customers happy and having a bad reputation. When it comes to retail or any business really relationships with customers is very important. One unhappy customer can ruin the experience for others.
Question 3: What mistakes have you committed as a business manager?
Mistakes I’ve made in the past is think that I can do everything by myself. With a business like mine it sometimes feels like we work in a kitchen. We are constantly working on something and without my staff members and team I wouldn’t be able to survive. Each one of my employees has a specific role that they do and together we are able to succeed in the business and have continuous loyal customers that come daily or seasonally.
Interview 3
I interviewed briefly a young manager at Village Inn; Sadonna Speranza just took her first position as a manager.
