Oak cliff, a place where gunshots and sirens are familiar sounds, never really knowing what is going around you. That’s where I grew up- living in constant fear, wondering if I will ever be able to escape this detrimental, disastrous of an area. Being surrounded by strangers who constrict you of becoming who you want to be. (These families and children have been brainwashed with the idea of not seeking education beyond high school because of where they live and its reputation.) I want to be a part of something greater than myself. Seeing people around me taking advantage of this free education system, motivated me to be involved in organizations where academic excellence is illuminated and being a leader is what is expected. As a leader, I promote to others to work at their fullest potential and encourage them to help others in need, if not this place we live in will never move a step forward. Taking part in this drives me to continue being involved in groups at college, where serving others is the goal. Being a leader comes instinctively to me, since my parents are always working hard to provide a better life for my siblings and I, because my parents are always working I had to step up and take charge, becoming a role model for not only my immediate family but to those around me. It is important for me to be an individual who inspires others to be the best person they can be, because I want the people who surround me to know they can defy the odds that have been imposed by the people before them.
