Looking back and thinking about my decision of pursuing medicine as a career, I realize that there has been an array of personal and clinical experiences that brought me where I am today. The first time I realized internal medicine was my calling was at the beginning of my clinical clerkships, when I started to rotate in a variety of clinical settings, seeing a blend of medical conditions that urged me to think deeply about patients’ symptoms and to find the pathophysiologic root of their condition. I have chosen internal medicine not only because of the constant challenging medical cases, but also because it enables me to build a long term rapport with my patients and their families and to teach them the importance of prevention. Also, in Romania the residency training is mainly straight into subspecialty. The education and experience in medicine have provided me with a strong background from both a theoretical and clinical perspective, and also taught me how essential it is to be understanding and empathic with the emotional needs of my patients. One of the most notable memory from my residency training is the one of Mr. V., an 83 year old man, who suffered from STEMI complicated by cardiac arrest and cardiogenic shock. From him I learnt the unique connection that is created between the doctor and the patient. After a long stay in the hospital, Mr.V. wrote a book (“The Miracle from the 5th floor”) about his experiences and dedicated it to our team.
