Composition 1 covered a few main writing styles, while also teaching the breakdown of how a good essay should be written. It is a class taken by the majority of students who will ever go to high school or college. Other skills were covered such as grammar and mechanics, sentence structure and knowledge on verbs and nouns. Having enjoyed writing and English previously from elementary and middle school, I was fairly excited to dive into the course and learn new ideas. The unexpected challenges of the course took me by surprise. By taking Composition 1 course, while at first felt boring after seemingly knowing most of the information, it was a much needed reminder for my writing skills while learning new ones. Composition became a struggle for me at first, with a mix of, what seemed like, unneeded review on already learned topics and essays on new writing styles. These essays included comparing and contrasting, writing in the social sciences and writing in the humanities. I found the topics for the essays were hard to write about, since I find pleasure in creative writings rather than formal essay type styles. As I became stressed, I tried my best to stay on task so I wouldn’t be turning the essays in the night before the due date. Before this class, I wrote in a less organized format, just winging the whole thing. More often than not, I would just write my essay, giving no thought or time to thinking the essay through first. The course taught me to be well organized, finding my research first and planning out before I began writing. This helped the ideas and thoughts flow much easier when I began to write the first draft. Eventually I did understand the point of each essay, the skills needed, and why these styles are important to
