A Primer on Science, Religion, Evolution and Creationism

Creationism is the religious belief that the universe and life originated from specific acts of divine creation. Evolution is change in the heritable characteristics of is biological populations over successive generations. Science is the intellectual and practical activity encompassing the systematic study of the structure and behavior of the physical and natural world through observation and experiment. Religion is the belief in worship of a superhuman controlling power, especially a personal God or gods. All 4 of these are slightly in common because they are all beliefs based off of theories and ideas. The “Young-Earth” Creationists hold that the sacred text provides an inerrant account of how the universe, all life and humankind came into existence. This is a belief that the Earth and all life was created by direct acts of God less than 10,000 years ago. I chose this as number 1 on my scale because I believe that the Earth was created by God himself. On the same scale 1-9 I would choose “Old-Earth” Creationists as my number 3 because it ties in a little bit with the “Young-Earth” Creationists. “Old-Earth” Creationists hold that the sacred text is an infallible account of why the universe, all life and humankind came into existence, but accepts that the “days” of creation are metaphorical and could represent very long periods of time.
