For this assignment, I have chosen the GAA as my topic. I chose this topic as I enjoy promoting participation for all children of all ages and skill ability which is the main ethos of the GAA. In an article by Cedric Cullingford (Cullingford, 1987) an interview was carried out by the author in which it shows that children enjoy things when they are related to real life situations. It is easier for children to learn about a difficult topic if they can relate it to situations in which they have seen. Children wish to be involved in discovering the answers to equations or situations rather than being told the answers and told to learn the answers.

• Energy and forces – Light: The children will associate the sense of seeing and the presence of light to see on the pitch.
With infant classes it is very important that that they learn through doing. According to ‘Teaching Maths through Theme-Based Resources: Pedagogic Style, 'Theme' and 'Maths' in Lessons’ maths is often dissociated with real life situations and children can find it hard to link maths with real life situations so, with the use of hands on activities and having a theme to base maths and science on, this will make the link easier for children. Teaching approaches based on themes help children to see maths as an exciting resource for solving problems. (Chronaki, 2000).
The Aistear curriculum, states that much of children’s learning and development takes place through being active. Hands-on experiences allow the children opportunities to use their senses to explore different areas. (NCCA,
