Success is a word often used in the English language, especially by Americans. Our country strongly believes in the success of its people and of their nation. From winning a spelling bee to graduating college, people will look at the parents of that child or college student and say, "Wow, they are so successful." There are multiple ways to describe success and we often pry ourselves to accomplish our idea of success. A women once said, "But while we often rejoice in the success of people far removed from ourselves-people who work in another profession, live in another community, or are endowed with a talent that we do not especially want from ourselves-we tend to regard the success of people close at hand, within our own small group, a threat."(Margaret Mead) This quote says a lot about how Americans handle success and treat others when they have greater success. It is simple to just slide by and graduate, but a lot of what you do in high school predicts your future. There are underachievers, basic, overachievers, and of course the overactive honor students. Many may think there is not a lot to achieve in high school, but that is not true. High school is also a time of figuring out who you want to become in life and a lot of that starts with noticing what others do. You aren't born an overachiever, you build your character to be that way. Teenagers have a tendency to look around and say I want her clothes or I want to be as good as her at sports, so many will try to be that. They will see someone who is liked and does well in school and wants to be them. Teenagers are extremely jealous of other people's success and that is when they get a taste of figuring out how to be better than the other person.
