This essay will discuss the diversity within judicial system in UK. The formation within the judiciary system is usually old white males that are in upper class barely any female or other ethnic judges. However this changed in 2004, the first woman Baroness Hale became the first woman Lord of Appeal and in 2009 she was the first female to become the justice of the Supreme Court. In 2013 she was appointed as Deputy President of Supreme Court. Diversity is acknowledging and respecting other people’s background and accepting that each individual is distinctive from one another. There are many factors that can affect the diversity such as ethnicity, gender, religious beliefs and social class. Although, they don’t make law, they ensure that the law is applied fairly, settle any disputes and reprimand those who broke the law. It creates distinctions, the good from the bad and its impact on society regarding the taboo. They give a true definition to what laws actually mean as their interpretations create this. Their role within the court is to make decisions and deliver judgement on the matter before them, and in the case of criminal trial with a jury, judges are required to explain the law to the jury and direct on how to apply it to the facts. Judges must use their knowledge of the law and apply to parties within the court, acting fairly and not allowing any personal opinion to make their judgement. The judiciary should not only consider the judicial system but also those in other legal professions, such as Barristers, Solicitors and Legal Executives, this way it will create more diversity and appeal to different backgrounds until they are ready and suitable for judicial
