Edgar Allan Poe was born in Boston on January 19, 1809 and died on October 7, 1849 in Baltimore. He was famous for being an American short-story writer, poet, critic, and editor. Poe is credited to be the inventor of modern detective stories. Despite all the great things about Edgar Poe, he had a very difficult life. One may believe his difficulty in life contributed to how great of a writer he was. When Edgar was only two years old, his mother died. His parents were separated, so he was adopted by Mr. and Mrs. John Allan. Even though John Allan had plenty of money, he only gave Edgar about a third of what he needed when he went to the University of Virginia.
