Educational Philosophy Statement

When I think of the reason why I decided to become a teacher, I wish I can say that I felt the call since I was a little girl or that I used to play with my dolls and pretend to be their teacher. My decision to become a teacher came later in my life, when I was close to being 30 years old. However, the idea to help my community and to create a better world was with me since I came to this country. I had came to the United States when I was 14 years old, but it was when I was 16 years old when I noticed that students like me who had emigrated from other countries were invisible. For some reason I knew that the change I wanted for my community had to start with me, and higher education was an important piece in this puzzle. I was very involved with my community, and I was constantly helping young teenagers and their parents. I was either motivating young students to pursue a higher education or teaching their parents how to read and write. Parents were an important factor in this whole idea. In this school I was fortunate to have two great mentors who provided me with many teaching tools. During the six months of student teaching I felt that I was really close to reach the final piece of my puzzle, but life took me to a different route. Right after I finished my student teaching, most of the school districts stopped hiring new teachers due to budgetery restrictions on new falculty, so my only option was to be a substitute teacher, so that’s what I did. I thought this was the perfect opportunity to see all of the spectrums of public education. I didn’t limit myself to just sub for high school teachers. I went all in. I was a K-12 substitute teacher and Special Ed sub too. As a result, I learned a lot about our education system which made me feel more
