Educational Philosophy Statement

Every classroom has a distinct personality. This personality is composed of various beliefs, ideas, strategies and philosophies. While countless teaching philosophies have proven to be successful in the classroom, I believe a student-centered philosophy ensures a healthy and positive learning environment.
When learners walk into my classroom, I want them to feel like they are entering a safe, creative, organized and exciting space. Students will be encompassed by vivid colors, vast displays of their own work and personalized areas in which each student can claim ownership. Students will sit five to a table to cultivate a sense of community and engaging interactions. Each child will strive to foster healthy and social relationships with all individuals in the classroom in order to learn from the experiences of others. I want my classroom to be an open environment where the learners are the main focus. Like progressive education, I believe education stems from the experience of each child. The students themselves will have an active voice in their own education, which will in turn create intrinsic motivation. Intrinsic motivation, paired with learning communities, will allow the students to progress individually and collaboratively in the classroom. Like progressive education, I believe that students should make meaning through the learning process. Hands-on activities, class discussions and informative peer reviews all allow the student to enjoy the educational growth process. For example, a student-based class discussion will expose the students to various viewpoints, social contexts and other ways of thinking. I believe that children should learn how to effectively communicate, how to problem solve, how to become a respectful citizen and how to develop an investigative approach to learning about all
