I can honestly admit that I have not yet accrued much experience as a graduate student, this semester being my first. However, I can already say that being a graduate student is an incredible honor. The ability to pursue higher education has always been a dream of mine. What has really stuck out to me so far has been the incredible availability of the staff to guide and support my journey through graduate school. Even though graduate students have greater expectations placed upon them then undergraduate students, the CSUF staff has taken every effort to make the transition smooth and not overwhelming. I attended a graduate student orientation which was extremely informative and interesting, and learned that every graduate student in the History department will have a committee of professors guiding them along their way and graduate student advisors to keep them on track. But immediately upon returning to school, through the help of the CSUF and History department staff, my mind was immediately put at ease. They all want me to succeed and want me to thrive. They are available every step of the way to help this whole experience feel less frightening and more exciting. There was such a wealth of information available to me; countless online resources can be found and there are so many knowledgeable employees to help guide me to the answers I’ve needed. The application process and requirements to get into grad school in the first place became clear and reasonable very quickly. I cannot recommend higher education enough; it can only enhance your life in every way. Having a greater knowledge base and more experience reading, writing, analyzing, or whatever your major leads you to can never hurt. From a pragmatic perspective, today’s world is becoming more and more demanding and bachelor’s degrees are becoming the new high school diploma. It is simply going to become a must to obtain a higher level of education to excel in any
