The thought of caring and assisting the ailing community has being my dream from childhood and it came full cycle for me through a tragic incidence of my late sick dad days while in the hospital. As a young child who grew up in Western Africa, I definitely understand what vulnerable population meant first hand. After several days of my dad illness at home with no healthcare coverage to transport him to the hospital, a distance cousin came to my family rescue and agreed to pay for his care. While at the hospital, I watched how the healthcare workforce took care of my sick dad with compassion, attention to detail, and humility. The workforce worked fiercely to save my dad’s life and still have time to comfort my mother and siblings through this trying time. It was there 45 years ago; I made a decision to become a nurse willingly, to shine a cheerful light and to make an impact. I have been a nurse now for 24 years and the compassion to make an impact still invigorates me, I have travelled to Africa west and east on a medical mission with different groups to assist the underserved populations. Our dedicated group served over 1,500 Africans living in the rural communities.
