Intercultural Model of Ethical Decision Making (IMED) The role of the school counselor is determined by the ethical questioning that comes from the standards of practices, the actions taken, and more so, the role the counselor takes. The school setting is a special one, nowadays, there are more students of different cultural backgrounds, students that need to cope with broken families, and crisis such as family abuse. The role of the school counselor is crucial to help students to cope with the different situations life throws at them. Personal values and beliefs cannot interfere with the school’s codes and those of the client’s. ACA Code of Ethics, 2014, p.407, C.1. states that it is the counselor’s responsibility to understand and abide by the codes. According to Luke, Goodrich, & Gilbride, 2013, p. 193, in order for counselors to provide access to services and opportunities for students, they need to consider certain important steps regarding cultural, religious, and worldview (CRW). 1- recognize if CRW’s are factors present in a problem, 2- identify relevant CRW factors, 3- identify policies and procedures, 4- consult with cultural experts to ensure accuracy and clarity of key CRW factors, 5- list, record, and identify alternative courses of action and decisions taken 6- analyze course of actions that are consistent with CRW factors, explicate possible factors, and label the decisions involved, lastly, 7- select, document, and evaluate the course of action that best suits the needs of the student within the CRW. Counselors will be better equipped when these steps are followed. This model is very effective to the school counselor since there are only seven steps to follow and to refer to. This model can be used when counselors recognize that there is conflict between work ethical issues and their own beliefs. An example on how this model can be use by a counselor, could be as
