America is the country with the highest obesity rate, however, many other countries struggle with this as well. Obesity can be stopped and controlled by the consumers, but in reality, the food industry is to blame. This food is being handed to the consumers, whether it being healthy or unhealthy. Many different food industries are at fault for obesity, due to the fact that the food proportions are increasing and the most cost efficient food is unhealthy.
Even though consumers do have the right to choose the size of their meal or snack and the amount of which is consumed, the food industry could put a stop in how much the portions increase throughout the years. According to the PBS organization, “ In the time span of fifty-four years the cups in popcorn heave increased seven times, the same way a chocolate bar has increased three times in the past 111 years,” (“Numbers”). Throughout the years, portions have increased ridiculously giving wider options for consumers to eat more. Handing more food to people for equal or less price encourages them to eat more rather than stopping their bad habits. Many places now offer what’s called ‘value meals’ or ‘super sizes’, all this leads to bad unhealthy choices. Murray writes, “Buffets abound and food outlets offer “value meals,” providing more food for less cost,” (Murray). In fact, portion sizes are increasing within the years, the same way obesity rates are shooting up, on the contrary, the food industry trying to lower the portions and the obesity rate. Some studies have demonstrated how, the portions over the years changing at a drastic rate, and not helping the obesity epidemic.
