America, the land of the free and home of the brave. One of the reasons people choose to come to this country is to avoid persecution for their life choices that they may receive in their home towns but unfortunately, in today’s modern society there is still persecution and social injustice inhabiting this country. One of these being the illegalization of gay marriage. In the past 50 years there has been a slow but steady progress in the civil rights movement for the LGBT community. The movement has led up to the controversial issue of gay marriage. Marriage should be available to everyone despite sexual preference. He states ‘we need to be thinking about marriage's role in sustaining the existence of the human species’. He believes that ‘Marriage is a necessary defense of a woman's sexuality and her human liberty from determined assault by men who would turn her into a slave, a concubine – something less than fully human’. Schulman stresses that if we allowed gay marriage, it would ‘reduce, even dissolve a marriages force’ to dignify, protect, and hold women sacred’. What Schulman doesn’t realize is that the way we view woman in a heterosexual marriage will not change based on whether two women, or men, can get married. He is reaching for a connection that isn’t there. Gend believes that by its very nature, heterosexuality has excluded itself from the circle of life, and that children need a mother and father for their different aspects. It is true that two women, and two men, cannot conceive, but that doesn’t mean that they can’t raise a child together. Research proves that children with same sex parents are no less different psychologically. In fact, it comes down to how the parents raise their child. There is no statistic that proves heterosexual couples are better parents than same sex
