Gun control is a prominent and controversial issue in the United States today. The second amendment gives us the right as a United States citizen to own a firearm. With increasing amounts of shootings throughout the country, our gun control laws come into questioning. Although stricter gun laws are needed it won’t stop criminals from obtaining illegal firearms and committing dangerous crimes.
There are many motives for someone to possess a firearm. One of the primary reasons that people own a gun is to protect themselves and their family. Guns provide a great source of psychological reassurance, especially among citizens who are concerned about the fear of being victimized by a crime. Logically people are less likely to attack other people who are armed. Besides protection, people also buy guns for their own personal collections, or for sport. Although everyone has the right to own a gun, will stricter gun laws make the United States a safer place?

The National Firearms Act of 1934 was the first federal gun law to be passed. This act imposed a two hundred-dollar excise tax on the sale of any fully automatic weapons. The Gun Control Act of 1968 made it a requirement for all gun dealers to have a federal license. This same act also “banned the sale of guns through the mail system and the sale of guns to all people who have formerly been convicted of violent felonies”(uwire). It also prohibited gun dealers from selling handguns out of state, and out-of-state residents from buying handguns (uwire). Although these laws seem effective what have they prevented? These laws have not eliminated gun-related crime in the past or to this day
