He holds the ultimate title of unparalleled genius producing the greatest examples of English Literature. The English language and the Western world’s adaptation of the way literature is written today is mainly attributable to Shakespeare’s literary writings. His writings include comedies, tragedies, romances, histories, sonnets, plays and other poems. His formation of an acting company supported many writers, musicians and artists who shared his passion and ideas during that time. He introduced “the English sonnet”: quatrains (four-line stanzas) with alternate rhymes, followed by a concluding couplet) (Fiero 151).
Words have allowed for the advancement and understanding of the human race. Authors choose words to express their ideas and share them throughout the world. Markus Zusak exemplifies an author’s goal to get there message across. In The Book Thief by Zusak, he uses words and all there power to entice key human aspects of our lives: emotion, logic and ethics.
He often did this by changing the grammatical form of many words and making them mean something slightly different (he changed nouns into verbs, changed verbs into adjectives, connected words never before used together, and added prefixes and suffixes), but he also is known for devising some original words by himself as well (Thorsbury, 2017; Jamieson, 2018). Thereupon, the plays Shakespeare has written give learners a better understanding of the original English language before it was manipulated by the later centuries (Thornsbury,
“O happy dagger,/This is thy sheath” (act 5, scene 3, line 171). All the time, people can change. Maybe it can be someone galls in love, death, heartbreak, etc. Some people do irrational things, anger, act without thinking, become independent, defiant, and many more. One person that changed after finding her love was Juliet from William Shakespeare’s play “Romeo and Juliet”.
The setting was transposed from 1300s Verona, Italy to 1990s “Verona Beach,” which has a Los Angeles vibe. The change of the time period and setting where the biggest changes to the text, yet the reason begin the changed showed how relevant Shakespeare's text can be. Luhrmann immediately shows the audience that this is not going to be Shakespeare's time. From the first shot and solique, the audience immediately knows though the language is Shakespeare the setting is ours, making the audience think about their society. Luhrmann never stops using Shakespeare's text to reflect his time.
Imagine loving someone from the only family that your family hates. Some people do anything to be with their lovers. Some people are willing to change just to be with them, this is the case in The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet. Romeo and Juliet is a play by William Shakespeare in the late 1500s. The play displays an act of love in a family feud.
"There is nothing either good or bad, but thinking makes it so," this is a quote from Hamlet, one of William Shakespeare's greatest tragedy's. William Shakespeare was a great poet and playwriter. Known throughout the world, the extravagant works of Shakespeare have been performed in thousands of villages and cities. William Shakespeare has many famous works including Romeo and Juliet, Julius Caesar, and Much Ado about nothing. Shakespeare made these plays all the way back in the 1500's.
While I am not going to compare myself to Shakespeare, because each individual’s writing is unique in its own right, (and I am also not delusional), I have learned a variety of important and life-changing skills that have sculpted my English knowledge throughout my time as an English 9/10 student. However, while I won’t compare my knowledge of the English language to Shakespeare, his writing does teach a variety of English-based skills that improve one’s understanding of the English language. Often seen in his work, such as Romeo and Juliet, Shakespeare uses relatable emotions and predicaments as tactics to engage and hold readers’ attention. All of humanity knows what it is like to love or be loved whether it is derived from another person, object, or something else entirely.
Juliet, a capulet, always used her words to express her love. When Juliet spoke of her love for Romeo she was always very crisp in what she wanted to say. Shakespeare made Juliet a character who was very skeptical about her feelings in the play write, Romeo and Juliet. However, he did make Juliet a very determined young woman when it came to expressing her love. Juliet is a girl with a big heart and would pour her whole heart out when expressing her love from someone, specifically Romeo.
Fate cannot be changed Romeo and Juliet is a story of love that was destined for obliteration. They were innocent and fell in love with the wrong person. Fate is responsible for every action, idea, and scenes that led to “the fearful passage of their death-mark’d love.” (Prologue.9) The three events and aspects of fate led to the tragedy of Romeo and Juliet include: the feud between the two families, the nurse’s betrayal of Juliet, and fate during the masquerade party.
Last but not least, Shakespeare’s works help with learning foreign languages, which in turn helps with being employed for jobs that operate on an international level. Deconstructing the text in the bard’s plays leads to students paying further attention to literary aspects such as grammar, sentence structure, and pronunciation. The skills improved from reading Shakespeare are the basis for learning almost every foreign language; students will have an easier time learning new languages and have a wider range of jobs if they do happen to become fluent in one. Shakespeare influence the world, topics range from language and reception. Shakespeare’s plays and poems works in popular culture due to new media and advertising, film, religion and arts. Shakespeare’s influence on the English language runs deep. If you have said or heard “It’s Greek to me,” you suffered from “green-eyed jealousy,” or your been “tongue-tied,” its Shakespeare’s.
Shakespeare is a great artist in his work but there are a lot of differences in our world compared to ours. He makes words have more meaning than we do in our time. Acting was actually bad in a way because he could not act without permission from someone royal or someone that leads a country. They could even have a penelty of being arressted for acting without permission. He also made many words which is now used in our grammar or punctuation.
In fact, many of the expressions and vocabulary one uses every day can be traced directly back to Shakespeare ’s works themselves. According to Source A, the article “Shakespeare influences the way we speak now” by Hephbizah Anderson, Shakespeare “gave us uniquely vivid way in which to express hope and despair, sorrow and rage, love and lust” (Anderson 1). Anderson cites many examples: “bedazzled,” “gloomy,” “grovel,” “sanctimonious,” the expressions “wild goose chase” and “in a pickle” (Anderson 1-2). It is clear that the effects Shakespeare’s contributions to the world of literature and language are so profound that they still see common use today in day-to-day conversation.
This was the process which led to literary language slowly rising towards standardization. 3.3 Standardization of the English Language William Shakespeare’s writings are a part of one of the factors that led to the standardization of English, because as soon as they became popular, his words and phrases were put into full action and from this, the grammar and rules of English slowly started being established. Moreover, his writings represent the rules that are currently being used in the English language, for example, he reinitiated the use of suffixes in grammar. Although he has been dead for a very long time and English has been more modernised since then, Shakespeare’s grammar still remains the same.
