Loren Thompson’s article, “Five Reasons The ISIS Fight Isn't About Islam,” provides insight on a topic that has strongly negative connotations in the USA. In it, Thompson explains his perspective on these views and generalizations that the community applies Islam as a culture and religion. He shares his thoughts on ISIS and Islam, and how grouping them as the same thing is erroneous.

ISIS is a very particular and small portion of Islam that should not represent the religion; the five reasons in his article rationally support his view that the behavior of ISIS being Islam is over-emphasized, especially when compared to previous threats. Specifically, he points out several occasions in Germany, Japan, and the United States to make his point.
To illustrate his point, Thompson continues to speak of the problem that over-generalization has presented. He brings up a reasonable comparison: generally calling ISIS an Islamic organisation is like generally calling the Klu Klux Klan a Christian one; the views of a small subset aren’t necessarily shared by the whole religion and may in fact be blatantly disagreed with by some.
Thompson’s is just one of many stands that can be taken on this topic. Some groups have been terrified of ISIS; a few have supported the organization’s actions; others don’t particularly care. Regardless, it seems that there is a group that agrees. Grouping this behavior and saying that this small portion is the bigger group is like saying all rectangles are squares, or all ellipses are circles; it’s an inaccurate generalization.
