When you search for “leader synonyms” on the internet, what are the results that you get? Often times, words such as “chief”,“head”, and “CEO” are among the first to pop up, and with good reason. These are the sorts of positions that many people think of when presented with the phrase. However, many people also relate leadership with being bossy, headstrong, and aggressive. Although these traits can play a part in certain leadership roles, in my experience, leadership is more so associated with guidance and direction. Not to say that one cannot be a leader if they are domineering or confrontational, but rather that the idea of what constitutes a leader is often misconstrued. It is a word that one encounters an innumerable amount of times in today’s society. Job interviewers and program applications frequently ask for leadership experience and many education systems encourage students to become the leaders of tomorrow. In my personal opinion, a good leader is someone who is not only confident enough in their abilities to advise a group, but also willing to be compassionate and open-minded enough to listen and include every teammate so as to ensure that everyone has their hand in completing their common goal. Confidence is a major factor as leaders need to have the self-assurance to do a number of things from being socially engaging to taking charge of a situation and at the moment (as is the case with many people my age), that sort of self-reliance is an attribute I currently lack. As such, I am not the world’s most extroverted person either. Working with others is fine and I love being a part of many clubs, but it takes me a long time to become comfortable enough with anyone in order to lead them in anything, especially since I have a horrible habit of overthinking my actions.
