In the workplace there are many different theories when it comes to leadership and management. Many work well in certain situations and not as well in other situations depending on the environment. This paper will examine three different theories on leadership and why each could be potentially useful or have a negative impact. The first theory examined will be Theory Y. This theory states that human nature is for employees to be not be lazy, able to enjoy work, and are willing to put forth effort into furthering organizational goals. If the company has quality employees then some pros and benefits of this theory can be expected. Some pros would be that there is a lot of trust between the employees and the leaders, which can lead to high workplace morale. This allows for employee autonomy which if the company has quality employees will benefit the organization because they will be able to get their work done. The next theory examine will be the path-goal theory. This theory is based on the expectancy theory of motivation, which states that employees will work with motivation based on how good they believe the reward is. Basically employees are motivated when their efforts lead to high performance, which will be rewarded, and that reward is valuable to them. Some cons for this theory is that if employees feel the reward is not good then they will not work as hard. Some pros for this theory are that if the employees feel there is a motivation to work harder then they will be high quality employees. This means that in order for the theory to be successful the organization should have a quality employee incentive program in place. If there is one, then the company will benefit from hardworking employees who are motivated to succeed as well as help the company
