Data Protection Legislation
The Data Protection Act 1998 is to protect people’s personal information stored on computers or in a paper filing system. It protects data such as names, addresses, contact information, medical conditions etc. It covers people’s racial or ethnic origin, political opinions, religion, health etc. The information is kept confidential and the only people who are able to view it are people with authorized access.
This act impacts on an authorisation such as a school in that all the student and staff’s information must be kept private. This would include their address, medical history, contact details etc. The only people who can access it are the staff but they cannot show other students. Examples of Ethical Issues
Whistle blowing is when an individual reports suspected wrongdoing at a workplace or in the community, this is to benefit the community.
For example, the NHS are encouraging residents in a care home to get their relatives to install a camera within their room to discourage inappropriate behaviour from carers, for example violence.
Another example of whistleblowing is Edward Snowden, he is an American computer professional who leaked classified information from the National Security Agency to the mainstream media in June 2013.
Whistle blowing occurs within a school in that if a supply teacher is covering a lesson due to the original teacher not being there, they should be delivering the lesson which the teacher has set. If the supply teacher was sat reading a paper or searching on an inappropriate website, then that would be unacceptable. Whistleblowing would occur if the students told another member of staff about what that supply teacher had been doing.
