Mission Statements
Why do you want to go to a certain college or University? What do they do or have that truly makes you want to spend years of your life attending? I am demonstrating the differences using logos, pathos and ethos on three of my favorite Universities that I hope to be attending someday. I will be using NC State, UNCW, and Campbell, and will demonstrate how they compare and contrast from each other. I have noticed you can connect all universities mission statements to at least one of the modes of persuasion. A mission statement for a university is a reason for students to attend the University and what the college wants in a student.
North Carolina State’s mission statement is mostly based on technology and as follows, “As

Our commitment to student engagement, creative inquiry, critical thinking, thoughtful expression, and responsible citizenship is expressed in our baccalaureate and master's' programs, as well as doctoral programs in areas of expertise that serve state needs. Our culture reflects our values of diversity and globalization, ethics and integrity, and excellence and innovation.” I found this quote by Pearce & David in 1987 for the mission statement to compare well. "Social responsibility of the organization towards social, community, minorities, women and environmental issues, that reflects concern for public image." I felt this was a good quote for UNCW because they mostly speak of cultural beliefs and student engagement as long as what fits the state's needs, which is for the community. The University is based on the thoughts of the people and the community. I felt that the mission statement targeted local and coastal students, along with people looking to help build upon the community. The persuasive technique that may have been used in this mission statement would be pathos, because it targets a select area of people around the area and speaks of the things you should or could do for the surrounding …show more content…
For example, Campbell is mostly based on religion, so most students coming in will be religious or have some sort of urge to want to learn based on their beliefs. UNCW is built on community leaders, so they will be community centered people striving to mainly take care of their area. NC State is mostly based on new technology and engineering, so most people wanting to attend there will be technology and science motivated. Mission statements for universities shows the purpose of the college and the people that go to the school are the ones who build it. Some general quotes for all the universities, "Clarity of a mission statement in the sense that it is broad in scope but neither overly general and detailed nor excessively specific." I liked this quote by Pearce & David in 1987 because it's simple and understandable. A mission statement is not meant to be outrageously long and it’s supposed to be short and sweet. Another quote I liked by Pearce & David in 1987, "The initial mission can be the building block for an overall strategy and the development of more specific functional strategies." This is just a reworded version of what I have said throughout the paper. The people that want to attend a certain college and the people universities want to come in will determine how the university is valued and looked at. Every University's mission statement is made to
