What is the difference between a'smart' and a'smart'? Prior exposure to leadership, positive & negative, is essential in the learning curve of becoming a well-rounded leader. One positive experience I had which began my development as a leader was during my time as a senior lifeguard for Corpus Christi Beach Rescue. I was put into this leadership position at eighteen years old. With only two years of prior experience, I was asked to lead fifteen to twenty lifeguards daily. This was a great opportunity for me, but it came with a lot of learning on how to successfully lead and enable a team. This is where I began understanding how to take care of a team and enable them to work effectively. In this position, I oversaw ensuring all personnel had the required equipment, training and knowledge needed for their daily tasks of lifeguarding. I would also be looking at making decisions in high stress environments that affect others safety and well-being. Over my three seasons in this leadership position, I learned the importance of being in tune with my personnel’s needs and how to make myself an approachable asset to them.
