I was sixteen when I started to listen conversations at home about moving to the Unites States. For me it was like hearing about an adventure. Thinking about the idea of living outside of Spain was something unimaginable. At first, I couldn’t believe the point that I was to live overseas, but time passed, and it became a reality. The move from Spain to the United States would cause a huge change in my life.
I had visited a number of different nations before I learn that I was going to move with my family to America. However, living is a completely different business than visiting. At first, when I tried to express something to someone from here, most times they would not understand what I was trying to say, but something else. After a couple of months living in the United States of America, I got used to the culture which was different in many aspects from the European culture. For example, the way people greet each other in the United States and how a relationship and friendship are developed is a lot more distant than in Europe.
I remember that on the first days at school I could not understand other kids talking about their “personal space”. In my previous schools, the physical contact between kids was much more common than in America. A couple of times I was admonish with a severe “don’t touch”. Now I know that the Americans can feel uncomfortable or even threatening if someone is in their immediate surrounding. Furthermore, when I go back to Spain on vacation, I perceive that some people don’t respect my own personal space according to the American standards.
I don’t know where I will spend the rest of my life, but most likely will be in home nation, Spain, where only a small percentage of people is proficient in English. I think that being able to speak the language of the international business will be a notable advantage in the job
