Intelligence is not the only feature that exists to define a scholar. Achievements in the field of community involvement, leadership and work are all aspects that one must be judged on as well in order to be considered a truly well rounded individual. I hope to help contribute ideas from all of these walks of life while at the same time retaining knowledge from others with experiences different from my own. Statistically speaking, math is not a field I have ever excelled in. Since the 6th grade, where I made my first B in a class, I found that I could not grasp the subject with any sort of relative ease as I could with all of my other classes. Each individual has their own unique spin on what it means to be a leader. For some, leadership is asking questions in class for a shy friend while for others it is fulfilling responsibilities. I believe leadership is a combination of understanding your duties and helping others pursue their own goals. One of the most fulfilling parts of leadership is watching others succeed because of your guidance. I am the LD captain for my high school debate team and a large part of the responsibility that comes with that is helping new debate students learn the ropes. I get to watch students express themselves through public speaking. Some of these students came to the first meeting adamantly refusing to speak more than once. Now, they are standing in front of others willingly giving speeches in order to better themselves in an event that I love and that they hopefully will learn to as well. Knowledge is one of the greatest things that one can attain. Material things will fade in and out but what you have been able to learn throughout your life will stay with you. I hope as a UT scholar to be able to obtain new insight on the world that surrounds me so that I may be able to see in a new
