When there is a situation, you should not put in negative feedback or complain like some of your fellow coworkers might be doing. Instead, encourage a positive movement out of the negative situation. Sit down with them and say, “How can we improve the situation to prevent any further occurrences?”. Gather information to get a better view on it and ask others to share their primary concerns. Together, you can all work as a team and formulate a plan which can later be addressed to the charge nurse, nurse manager, etc.
According to Alfaro-Lefevre, professionalism embodies the ideal performance levels that a nurse should exhibit (2020). In nursing, professionalism is carrying out one's practice with integrity and respect for clients and the profession. By applying professionalism, I can preserve the client's autonomy and dignity. Reflecting on my interview with Client X, I applied professionalism by demonstrating respect for the autonomy of Client X. For example, I introduced myself as a BCIT student nurse and informed Client X that I would use the interview for an academic paper that my professor would only see. This action demonstrated professionalism as I respected Client X's autonomy by providing information so they could decide whether to participate.
Leadership skills and team building skills are determining to the success of any professional. These soft skill attributes are very much determining to excel in life irrespective of one’s field of professional interest. My life experiences clubbed with my academic assignments have helped me a lot in building, and to nurture positive team skills. The Children’s Home of Reading-Acute Partial Hospitalization Program helped shape my perspective of professionalism thru constant reestablishments of what to expect when in an alternative hospitalization or residential treatment program. Incivility Workplace incivility affects our everyday interactions, professional nursing relationships and our organizations. It is important to be aware of incivility to address it. Incivility in the workplace doesn’t have to be a major event, but it may be little things daily that can make a huge impact. This affects the employee which impacts productivity and patient care. Employee turnover rates, job dissatisfaction, and poor workplace environments can be attributed to incivility.
I saw this as very unprofessional because regardless of the issues that we have with other coworkers, they should be taken with each other in a private manner and if it does not get resolved, then it should be taken to the next higher up position such as the nursing supervisor. Punctuality is just one of the key components in professionalism. As nurses, it is our responsibility to show professionalism in the workplace at all times. Nurses are constantly judged by our behaviors and how we present ourselves to others.

When looking at the function of professional nursing, the attitude, experiences, as well as factors such as demographics, social class, education, and values, can determine how the nurse will view violence in the workplace. These factors that have contributed to the development of the professional nurse can also determine how the nurse views and even reacts to workplace violence and aggression towards them. The qualities of the professional nurse and their background can determine how the human behavior from the patient is viewed and can lead to de-escalation or escalation of violent situations. The behavior of the patient can include cooperation, calmness, anxiety, aggression, or anger. Behaviors of aggression, anger, frustration, and acts of intimidation when patients are experiencing an illness can exacerbate stressful situations which can turn violent.
This situation presented an unresolved conflict between myself and the vice principal in my clinical placement. This conflict can be linked with the nursing concepts of interprofessional collaboration and communication, role clarification, and power. Therefore, it is understandable that nursing students working within an interprofessional team that does not demonstrate respect and understanding will result to ineffective care, health promotion delivery, and impede professional development. Interprofessional collaboration amongst health and non-health professionals is integral in optimizing health outcomes and promoting health.
This, in turn, lead to the incidental disclosure of Joseph Stevens’ health information. To help prevent this mistake in the future, Sue and the compliance officer should work together to institute training that educates employees on incidental disclosure and how to minimize the occurrence.
