Tired of eating rice, meat, and beans for lunch. Also, listening to the lunch lady exclaim “eat it all or else you will not grow”. Quite frankly, nine-year-old me decided that growth was not important if it meant not having to eat rice, meat, and beans every day. I remember asking my cousin, Ana, “How is the lunch over there?”. This was a vital detail that nine-year-old me had to know. Which lead to me becoming extremely excited as Ana told me that they served food like burgers, hot dogs, nuggets, and pizza. Throughout the excitement, I failed to realize that I was moving to Reading, PA from Puerto Rico. That I was going to leave a lot of things behind, learn a different language, and adapt to a new school while trying to make new friends. …show more content…

I was the new girl who did not know English that arrived out of nowhere in the middle of the school year. As I stood there I felt their eyes on me as they question who I was. The teacher spoke to me and I felt a bit of panic rushing through my body as I could not understand the words coming out of her mouth. She gave a sweet smile as she waited for my answer, and I could do was let out a mumbled “No hablo ingles”. Her eyes widened as she was suddenly surprised and she continued on to tell me, “I only know a little bit of Spanish, yo solo hablo un poquito de Espanol”. I only responded with a slight nod as I was starting to realize that it was going to be hard to communicate with others. Excitement finally came back as it was lunch time, pizza time! However, things did not go as planned for me. It was almost as if my life was based off a movie for that brief moment. The cameraman would do a long shot, showing the different groups of people filling up the cafeteria. The shot smoothly transitions into a medium shot as I slowly make my way towards the table.
