Being a volunteer has helped me immensely; mentally and academically. I have volunteered many times in many locations hoping to learn and experience new opportunities, which thankfully I have. I have learned how to be a role model, how to act and respond in specific situations, and how to be respectful and responsible. I know this has taught me to improve my attitude and gain experience in working with other people similar or different than myself.
When I volunteered as a Shine Bright Tutor I learned a lot about the students I was tutoring. I learned how their mindset works and what is needed to help them succeed in life. I formed a special bond with each and every one of them, I was a role model to them and I would always cherish every single minute of it. Why? Because in order to help others, one needs to be able to communicate with them. There are different ways of communicating with different people, and I don’t mean just talking. It’s the way one acts towards a person, the way you express your feelings and how you support that person. I learned this when I volunteered at the Children’s Therapy Center with children who have autism. Them having autism doesn’t make them any less than any other child, but it does mean more responsibility. Which brings up another skill that I know I will use in life, responsibility. I was able to experience it and learn from it. Responsibility is something that will get me very far in life, it will help me accomplish my goals and make situations easier.
