Medical school has been an exciting and rewarding journey. It has been a time to discover personal values and strengths, establish life goals and choose a fitting career path. During my clinical rotations, I began searching for my future specialty and carefully considered each one. I realized my interests are broad: working with kids and adults, outpatient clinics, preventative health and chronic disease management. I liked being primarily responsible for a patient’s care and following their course, seeing a wide range of pathology and being able to address almost any patient need. I really enjoyed most of my rotations. However, I could not fully commit to any specific specialty. In Family Medicine, I found a diverse and dynamic field that encompassed many of the varying facets of medicine I had come to love.

Family Physicians play a vital role in healthcare and the community. They have the power to make a significant impact on patients’ overall health and quality of life. Building long-term relationships gives them a unique position to lend an ear, offer advice, and encourage positive choices. They can act as a role model for children and adolescents. Just before my third year at UCLA, my father began having serious health issues and had multiple extensive spine surgeries and a pituitary surgery. I moved home to help out, tried to balance it with school, but my academics suffered, and I ultimately had to interrupt my studies. I later transferred to AUC, determined to continue my dream of becoming a physician. I worked hard and honored most rotations. This experience taught me valuable lessons. I learned to handle critical situations under tremendous stress. I also learned that setbacks and difficulties occur in life, but are temporary, and goals are attainable through perseverance.
