There are many reasons I have chosen to pursue a master of science in education, and I believe that Northwestern University’s program is an excellent choice for me because of the approaches it takes to educating teachers and the values that are outlined in Northwestern’s conceptual framework. Through Northwestern’s MSEd program, I can become certified to teach so I can reach students in a variety of schools, and I would gain teaching experience in the fall through increased responsibilities in a field placement prior to student teaching. I would also be able to continually improve as a teacher and focus on helping all of my students, regardless of their family or economic background, by examining the social context of education. The main reason that I want to pursue of master of science in education is so that I can become a certified secondary teacher, so that I can teach students who rely the most on a quality public education. I was lucky enough to receive an excellent public school education that prepared me for college and beyond, and I believe all students, regardless of where they live and how their parents were educated, deserve that same opportunity. I know that I will be most successful as a student teacher after I have had a chance to learn my students’ names and become familiar with their classroom culture before completely taking over for my host teacher. Additionally, the opportunity that Northwestern provides for student teachers to gradually increase responsibility in the fall semester means that I will be able to try different pedagogy so I can be confident on my first full day of student
