Being asked that life changing question, ‘What do you want to do the rest of your life?’ Was the most difficult question asked at seventeen years old. This left me unsure of what career path to take in life.
Since having someone in my family so ill I was always around a caring profession. When seeing the nurses’ work they inspired and introduced me to caring for others, this is where the desire for midwifery and children’s nursing begun.
I am currently studying an Extended Diploma in Health Studies at a local Technical College in Coleraine. This course was chosen with midwifery and children nursing as my focus of a career. I believe that having such a wide range of classes it teaches me organisational skills, team working and time management, skills which are a huge importance working within a caring profession. My course doesn’t only teach me about the human body it also gives me an insight to sociology, where it gives me the confidence to be aware of different cultures within the community, therefore giving me the ability to meet their individual needs. I believe this is an essential skill that midwives or paediatric nurses must have to support mothers and their partners to be the best they can.

My first placement was set in a nursery were I was interacting with 0-2 year old children. I feel this gave me a fantastic insight on how children develop and grow; this is where I confirmed I wanted to be a midwife or paediatric nurse. In my second year I was lucky to be given the chance to attend the maternity and children’s ward for a number of weeks. This opened my eyes to what these careers entailed every day. By just spending a day in each ward I am now determined to pursue in either one of these
