Throughout my adult life I have worked within different sectors of health and social care. I started work within a residential setting and found this to be a very rewarding place to work. I knew that I was on the right journey.
I later began work as an auxiliary nurse with the N.H.S. where I truly realised my vocation in life. I worked on the bank where I had a diverse choice of shifts. I gained a wide range of skills and knowledge; from basic skills of infection control patient observations such as B.P, pulse, temperature and many general skills that help support trained staff, I established excellent communication and listening skills, team work and interpersonal skills, compassion and empathy, which I believe is paramount within nursing and life itself.
A change of career led me to youth work where my interest in mental health became much more apparent. Although I had touched on mental health within general nursing, my role and studies within youth work led me to working alongside young people aged 14-25, some of whom had personal difficulties ranging from anxiety and depression to self-harm and this led me to plan and deliver …show more content…

Some of the young adults came from extremely difficult backgrounds and had a history of mental health difficulties. My role included working alongside two young adults who suffered from depression one who regularly self-harmed. I applied my role with a person-centred approach; listening to the young person, what their needs were and how we could work as a team to enhance their education and reduce anxieties. I find there is an intense stigma towards mental health, which is not viewed in the same way as a physical illness, and there are so many young adults who have the fear of not seeking help.
