Being educated in an interactive setting helped me overcome my biggest struggle: anxiety. With the constant fear of being judged, I restricted myself from asking questions and being active in the classroom. Because of this, I spoke with my teacher about a possible solutions. In the end, my teacher suggested writing in a journal. Every night, I wrote down a goal in which I would accomplish the following day in class. My first goal was, simply, to raise my hand and ask a question. Day by day, I learned how to grow as a student and as a person. I availed my confidence to introduce new opportunities in school; I sought more challenging work and joined a math program, Kumon, to advance myself in the curriculum. I learned to take hold of my education, guiding it along the path of my curious mind. I was infatuated with the correlation between growth and education. Both concepts are intertwined; as you develop as a student, you learn how to adapt to various stages in life. With this in mind, I was able to conquer the rigor of AP classes and the social stress associated with high school. As I grew, I longed to not only better myself as a student, but to improve my school. Being an environmental advocate, I chaired a recycling committee through the National Honor Society. As a Service Committee member, I was able to advertise the importance of recycling to peers and teachers. I encouraged peers to volunteer like I do, cleaning up trash with Cary Teen Council and other local programs. Having the initiative to make a difference is imperative to leading and inspiring others. Luckily, it is a quality that has been ingrained in my identity. My accomplishments in life are founded by my ability to take action. I am always looking for situations in which I can assist others, which is why I volunteer with WakeMed Hospitals, caring for patients and delivering gifts throughout the hospital.
