“Education is for improving the lives of others and for leaving your community and world better than you found it. ” (Marian Wright Edelman) As a high school student, this is a quote I stand by as education and service to others are the foundations to a better community, and world. Education is the key to open doors of opportunities, with those opportunities you can improve the lives of others, and they can do the same around their environment.
Growing up in the “bad side” of town with illegal activity being the norm, I was influenced by the world around me, my world. Education and community service were frown upon, as the cool kids spat at such a “ridiculous” thing, as they believed they had nothing to gain for caring about a so-called, “insignificant thing.” My environment and the people in that environment influenced me negatively, which I soon suffered the consequences of my actions. …show more content…

Whenever our situation seemed like an endless dark hole my mother will always remind me that education is the key to a better life. I never truly knew what she meant back when I was little, but once I gained information the world around me, I am aware of the society we live in and how the world works, knowing there are losers and there are winners. Despite, focusing on my education, I don't value it alone, I want to show the kids in my community the opportunities around them despite their background, that there is a way and will always be one, to have a better life. I want to show that there is value in everyone in my community, and with ambition and support they can reach happiness and live their desired life. I believe NHS can help me provide service to our community, as I have difficulty on how to start serving our community on my
