In today’s world of neuroscience research, the use of animals has become a controversial topic. In the past, research on animals has been used to gain a deeper understanding of the human body especially the brain. This type of research has allowed breakthrough in medicine, medical devices, surgeries and other methods to improve the health. However, animal rights activists have voiced their opinions in recent years against the use of animals as they deem it cruel. I believe that animal research is vital to the advancement of medicine and knowledge of not only humans but of many other animals as well. However, I believe there should be rules and regulations to respect the lives of the animals used. As long as the quality of life of animals is …show more content…

Those against animal research believe that restricting the free life of an animal to a laboratory is unethical. However, I believe that allowing an animal to live a free life presents dangers of itself such as having to avoid predators and placing themselves in dangerous positions to obtain resources in order to live. Animals within a laboratory are given such resources in abundance and these animals are protected from predators. Additionally, there are many animals that are restricted to a free life through domestication such as dogs, cats, fish, etc. On the other hand, it should be noted that these domesticated animals do not have to undergo experimentation or potential deliberate suffering. Therefore, I propose that any such experimentation on animals that may hinder the quality of life of animals should be tightly regulated and must follow strict guidelines to ensure the most knowledge and understanding with the least amount of suffering possible. It is necessary for experimentation involving suffering and pain because certain types of medicine and knowledge cannot be gained without having an animal experience pain. I believe the suffering of a small handful of animals is ethical as long as it leads to the benefit of many. This is why it is important for this type of research to have a plausible and direct goal in mind so that the amount of damage inflicted upon animals is kept to a
