“The assumption that animals are without rights and the illusion that our treatment of them has no moral significance is a positively outrageous example of Western crudity and barbarity. Universal compassion is the only guarantee of morality,” said Arthur Shopenhauer. Even though this was said decades ago, it is still relevant today. This is what is happening in laboratories across the country: all kinds of animals are being abused in incredulous ways that consumers are oblivious to. The United States has no laws or regulations on how animals should be treated while being experimented on. Any experiment can be conducted and anything the experiments require can be done. Along with the disbelieving ways these animals are treated, most studies are inaccurate …show more content…
The problem with this is that there are very minimal regulations on these companies that test on animals. The FDA advises that companies should use the most humane ways of testing possible, but the decision is ultimately left up to the company (FDA). The Public Health Service Policy on Human Care and Use of Laboratory Animals is the only regulation that companies are required to follow, but it is very liberal and nonspecific. It states that animals should be tested in ways that cause the least discomfort and distress possible (NIH). This is not the case in most of these labs. Companies are not worried about the comfort or the living conditions of these animals, they only care about doing things in a way that costs them the least amount of money. Because of this, these animals are treated horrifically. They are kept in tiny cages, isolated from the rest of the world. The only contact they get is when scientists take them out to use them for painful experiments. Even though they are required to sedate them and give them anesthesia for painful procedures, most of these companies do
